Often when an image is heavily processed, such as in the HDR process or any processing that greatly increases saturation and contrast, areas of the image, particularly in the sky, will become smudged gray, maybe black or even glow white. In a previous episode of Photoshop for Photographers I did a composite using the Quick Selection Tool. In that video, the model had relatively straight, combed hair. Unfortunately, the Quick Selection Tool is relatively worthless if you’re trying to composite a model with curly hair or flyaway hair. In this video, I demonstrate a method to composite such a model, in this case a model with curly hair, by using a Photoshop selection process called, “Color Range”.

Tilt shift lenses are often used by architectural photographers because they have controls on them that can correct for any geometric distortions induced by the lens. They’re often used by portrait photographers as well in their environmental and lifestyle shots to put more emphasis on the subject. Finally, landscape photographers often use them to control blur createvly because the blur of the tilt shift effect can make an expansive landscape appear to be a miniature model shot with a macro lens.

In Episode 10 I demonstrated how to swap a sky utilizing a Selection. Well, what if your image is too complex to get a good selection? What do you do? You watch this! Episode 12 of Photoshop For Photographers where I show how it’s done.
Doing the swap as shown in this video only works if the only blue in your image is the sky. It won’t work as well if you have blue water, flowers or anything else blue besides the sky.
