Steve Perry Explains Lens Diffraction

by Anthony Morganti

Lens Diffraction

Often, when I see the first group of images from one of my new photography students, I find that they’ve stopped down most, if not all, of their landscape images to f/22 requiring that I immediately teach them about diffraction and why it’s not wise, and not needed, to stop down a lens so far. Sometimes I receive a bit of pushback when I tell them to try shooting the scene at f/8. Automatically I hear, “What about the depth of field?” Well, in the video below, Steve Perry does an awesome job of explaining what lens diffraction is and why you don’t need, in most situations, to stop down so far.

Photoshop For Photographers – Episode 12: Swap a Sky – Redux

by Anthony Morganti

If you’re reading this in your email, click on the headline to see the video.

In Episode 10 I demonstrated how to swap a sky utilizing a Selection. Well, what if your image is too complex to get a good selection? What do you do? You watch this! Episode 12 of Photoshop For Photographers where I show how it’s done.

Doing the swap as shown in this video only works if the only blue in your image is the sky. It won’t work as well if you have blue water, flowers or anything else blue besides the sky.

Learn Lightroom 5 – Part 31: Process a Night Image

by Anthony Morganti

If you’re reading this in your email, click here for the video.

In this, Episode 31 of Learn Lightroom 5, I process a night image. My nightime processing procedure is slightly different from that of a daytime shot. In this case, this specific image was underexposed. I did that on purpose because most often, our night shots are unexposed and I wanted to show you how to deal with that.

Learn Lightroom 5 – Part 29: Processing a Winter Scene

by Anthony Morganti

If you’re reading this in your email, click here for the video.

In this, Episode 29 of Learn Lightroom 5, I process a couple winter scenes. Winter scenes are challenging to capture because our camera’s metering system is often fooled causing the scene to be under exposed and the white balance to be misinterpreted.
