Book Review: Light, Gesture & Color by Jay Maisel

by Anthony Morganti

Light, Gesture, and Color (Voices That Matter) by Jay Maisel

To say that Jay Maisel is one of my favorite photographers would be an understatement. Like a groupie stalking a rock star, I’ve been known to hang around the Bowery District and Lower East Side of New York City hoping I might run into Jay. The odd thing is that I’m over 50 and Jay is over 80 — long past the age of groupies stalking rock stars. Unfortunately I’ve yet to run into Jay and always return downtrodden — my wife just shakes her head and says nothing leaving me not sure if she’s amused, annoyed or contemplating divorce.

So, with that in mind, it’s difficult for me to give an unbiased review but I’ll do my best.

For years, Jay has talked about light, gesture and color explaining that all images hav...

Lightroom Quick Tips – Episode 10: Targeted Adjustments

by Anthony Morganti

This is the tenth episode of Lightroom Quick Tips where I give a single, quick Lightroom tip.

One of the most overlooked yet powerful tools in Lightroom are targeted adjustments. You can use them in a variety of ways but in this video, I demonstrate how you can use them to increase the saturation of the background of a scene yet leave the skin tones relatively untouched. Conversely I show how you can fix the skin tones on the people in those shots that include a heavily processed background.

Book Review – Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits

by Anthony Morganti

Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits: Stories and Techniques from a Photographer’s Photographer

I don’t often do book reviews but every now and than a book comes along which I find that I can’t put down. That’s what I found with Gregory Heisler’s book, 50 Portraits: Stories and Techniques from a Photographer’s Photographer.

It’s unusual that I would like a photography book such as this one as much as I do. That’s because I’m a very “X” and “O” type of guy. Probably because of my background in engineering — I tend to be very technical… overly technical one could argue and this book is not technical at all. As a matter of fact, before you rush off to buy this book I should mention what this book is and is not...
